Belief Systems

A wise man once said that there is a large class of men who think that nuance and intelligence (being a "free thinker") imply that one must be contrarian towards any pre-existing belief system.

This is ironic coming from a "nuanced free-thinker" as often, the thought processes behind this conclusion itself indicates a lack of nuance.

A question I would like to think about: is adhering to a belief system the superior mode of thought (even from an evolutionary point of view)? What is the importance of scripture to a man trying to form his own moral judgements? Is deontology superior to virtue-ethics?
